Talking Tom Cat 2, known simply as Talking Tom 2 in some regions, formerly known as Talking Cat 2 in Slovenia, is an interaction-based video game app developed by Outfit7 and originally released for iOS devices on May 27, 2011 as part of the Talking Tom & Friends franchise. It serves as a follow-up to the original Talking Tom Cat, released on June 26, 2010. It was developed by returning team members from the original app, as well as by new members such as Andrey Kravchenko, a Ukrainian 3D artist who unintentionally played a large role in the creation of the original Talking Tom Cat. Upon release, Talking Tom Cat 2 would receive huge success, receiving millions of downloads in merely days and would later be nominated for and win several awards at the 2011 Best App Ever Awards. It would also guest-star in the 2016 comedy film Nine Lives.

Talking Tom Cat 2 features the return of several elements that made the original Talking Tom Cat so successful. Its primary function is the talk back mechanic, which allows the app's main star, a talking cat named Tom, to repeat words the user says into the microphone with a high-pitched helium voice. The app also features a refreshed design, including a new look for Tom and a new setting which allows for several original interactions with the character. Ben, a character who previously appeared in Talking Ben the Dog, also plays a very prominent role in the app.

Development

After the success of Talking Tom Cat, Outfit7 CEO Andrej Nabergoj, who recently replaced the previous CEO Samo Login, decided to search for and recruit the person responsible for the cat model used in the app into his company. After several months, and calls to the Russian secret service agency, Andrey Kravchenko, freelance 3D artist, was located in Ukraine by Nabergoj and recruited by him into Outfit7 in 2010. Andrey Kravchenko played a large part in the production of Talking Tom Cat 2, as it was him who created the models for the app, as well as Tom's redesign.

Talking Tom Cat 2 was created by Outfit7 during a phase of the company which intended to show advancement in the mobile toy business. This phase was originally started with Talking Gina the Giraffe, which released a few months prior to this app.

Trivia

• Prior to it's release, this app was teased on the official Talking Tom Facebook page.
• This app made an appearance in the movie Nine Lives, where a character would use the game's repeating mechanic as an attempt to get his daughter to realize that it's him stuck inside a cat.
• When the app originally released on iOS, there existed a paid animation of Tom stamping his foot. This was removed in the 1.1 version.
  • Also in the 1.0 version on iOS, if you tapped on Tom while he was clinging on the chandelier light, it'll break off. This was changed in the 1.1 version for unknown reasons.
• Similarly to Talking Tom Cat before the app's relaunch, if the user were to install the latest version of the paid version of the app, the app would warn the user that it is no longer supported and the user would be forced to install the free version to continue playing the app, since both the full and free versions were being merged all into one app.
• Some features used to be paid in the free version, but now everything is free with the addition of more ads.
• Originally, this app costed $0.99 USD on Google Play Store.
• This is the first Talking Tom & Friends app to be released on televisions.
• There used to be an "Autism Speaks" cap and T-shirt for the organization of the same name. There also used to be a "Mars Pop" T-shirt as well as a "school sucks" T-shirt.
• The original Talking Tom Cat icon is still present on the phone button icon, as well as the pillow that Ben smacks Tom with when you press the feather button. This has yet to be updated.
• This app marks the first sequel that Outfit7 has made.
• This is the first Talking Tom & Friends app where the character has a breathing animation.
• When the app is started, Tom will look around as a cuckoo clock sound plays. But he could also do this when Ben appears in the window, and sometimes does it randomly on his own.
• Talking Tom Cat used to make a cameo appearance in this app, as it could be seen on a phone, but it was later replaced with My Talking Tom on November 14, 2013. Despite this, the button icon was never replaced and still features the original Tom.
• There was a desktop version of this app released on April 14, 2014 that was removed for unknown reasons. This version had an exclusive guitar button that made Tom play an electric guitar, a feature very similar to one that appears in Talking Pierre the Parrot.
  • Oddly, the current App Store and Google Play page for both iPhone and iPad, Android versions has a screenshot with Tom playing a red guitar, despite the lack of a guitar button.
• In the files of the app, there is an audio file called "No My Name Is Tom" on iOS and "AR Audio" on Android, which was originally used for the first version of the game on iOS. The sound would play when the player pressed the Phone button, while in newer versions, Tom will instead repeat what the player manually said into the microphone.
• When using the Phone feature in the iOS version of the game, the phone Tom pulls onto the screen resembles an iPhone, while in the Android version, it is changed to instead resemble the Nexus S, but with different button placements.
  • The desktop version of the app uses Android phones for the phone feature.
• The Samsung Smart TV version of the game can only be downloaded on 2015 Tizen TVs.
• If the app is running on an iPhone 2G, iPod Touch (1st and 2nd generations) or iPhone 3G, the game will lack the costumes feature, due to their slow processor.
• You cannot access the costume button in the old versions due to the servers shutting down.
  • You also cannot play old Android versions from 2011-2012 on Android 11+ due to scoped storage.
